Summer Wellness for Seniors

Stay Hydrated

One of the biggest risks for senior citizens during summers is dehydration. With old age, the body’s water retention decreases, which means one should have good sips of fluids. Encourage seniors to:

  • Drink a minimum of 8-10 glasses of water every day.
  • Consume juices, coconut water, and buttermilk.

At Sanctus Healthcare old age home in Pune, we ensure that each senior person always has access to fresh and hydrating drinks throughout the day.

Eat Light & Nutritious Meals

Eating heavy meals can lead to dyspepsia and discomfort from heat. The diet of senior citizens should include a few easy and light digestible foods, such as:

  • Seasonal fruits like watermelon, cucumber, and oranges.
  • Leafy greens, curd, and fresh homemade soups.
  • Avoid spicy and oily foods, as they tend to cause acidity.

Balanced and nutritious meals are prepared and served to the elderly residents at Sanctus Healthcare, to keep them fit and healthy.

Keep Cool & Dress Comfortably

The heavy sun exposure must be avoided by seniors; breathable cotton clothes should be worn to keep them cool. A few tips:

  • Stay indoors from 12 PM to 4 PM, as this time the sun is harshest.
  • Prefer light-colored and loose clothes.

At the old age home, we maintain a cool and comfortable environment for our residents and keep them secured from extreme temperatures.

Exercise with Caution

Exercise is required for physical well-being, but seniors must avoid burnout. These are some of the exercises that may be good for them in the summer:

  • Indoor yoga or stretching activity.
  • Morning or night walking during the cool hours.
  • Hydrating well before and after the activity.

In the care of seniors, trained caregivers are provided to assist them with light exercises.

Monitor Medications & Health Conditions

Heat-related illness may be caused in some seniors due to certain medications. Thus:

  • Store medicines in a dry and cool place to maintain their effectiveness.
  • Check blood pressure and sugar levels at regular intervals.
